Have you ever felt ‘stuck’ in life? Perhaps you find yourself in a job that is not working out the way you hoped, and you don’t know what to do? Maybe you feel stagnant in your walk with Jesus? Or you may have started down the road of taking drugs, only to find out that the path leads to a dead end, and you don’t know where to turn?
Imagine our surprise when we found our goat, Groot, stuck in the fence. We don’t know how he got there or how long he was in that position. He was definitely stuck and unable to freely move about. The more he tried to get free, the more he became entangled. It was only when Susan went over and gently helped him that he became free. We patched the hole and now keep an eye on him so it doesn’t happen again.
This experience taught us two key truths about what can be done when we feel stuck in life. First of all, we need the help of someone greater and stronger than us to enable us to get free. Someone with more wisdom and insight to show us the way. In 12-step recovery, this is the second step. ‘We come to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.’ Without this ‘Power’, we remain stuck. Secondly, we need to realize we can’t do it alone. The more we try to fix the situation, the worse it gets. We need the support of others. The recovery road is smoother when we are aided by others who are walking with us. Having encouraging people around us enables us to get unstuck and stay unstuck.
If you feel ‘stuck’, especially in addiction to drugs or alcohol, you can get free. Trust there is a Higher Power who can restore you to freedom. Know you are not alone and have supportive friends and family who will walk with you through your journey. Then the picture of your life will look very different.
